Christian and classical schools in Tucson, and how families pay for them

A wide field

Christian schools make up the largest group in our Pima County directory. They include Lutheran schools of three synods, Baptist and Presbyterian schools, an Adventist school on the southwest side, St. Michael's Parish Day School (Episcopal), and nondenominational K-12 campuses such as Desert Christian on the east side and Pusch Ridge Christian Academy, which received $1.9 million in original-credit STO money in fiscal 2025.

The classical option

Classical Christian education, built around the trivium, Latin and great books, has a real presence in Tucson. Veritas Academy and Tucson Baptist Academy both appear in the Association of Classical Christian Schools directory, and Pusch Ridge uses a grammar-school and upper-school structure. Ask a classical school about its reading load, Latin sequence and how it handles students joining in middle grades.

STO lists Christian schools rely on

ACSTO, the oldest and largest STO statewide by cumulative donations, serves Christian schools only and lists many Tucson campuses. IBE, APSTO and School Choice Arizona list most of them as well, and AZTO focuses on Christian education. Families active in a congregation often have members who direct their tax credit to these STOs each spring.

ESA or STO at a church school

Tuition at many Tucson church K-8 schools sits near or below the low end of the ESA range, which can make the ESA the larger source. Remember the ESA contract requires instruction in reading, grammar, math, social studies and science, and that no school is required to change its creed, admissions policy or curriculum to accept ESA students. Choose one path per child per year.

Membership listings are not accreditation

Many Christian schools here appear in the ACSI, ACCS or Cognia directories. A listing tells you the school is a member; it doesn't by itself confirm accreditation status. Ask the school directly, especially if your student plans on NCAA athletics or a university program that checks.

* Enrollment reported to the NCES Private School Survey (2023-24 or 2021-22). "STO lists" counts the School Tuition Organizations whose published school list included the school (Oct 2026). Arizona has no state list of ESA schools; ask each school whether it accepts ESA payments through ClassWallet.
